Can you hear the gentle murmur of the Tarpenbek? This unassuming stream, flowing right here before us, holds a story as winding as its original path. The Tarpenbek, a vital waterway in Hamburg, meanders for 21 kilometers, from its origins in Norderstedt to its final destination, the Alster, via the Eppendorfer Mühlenteich. Historically, the Tarpenbek was a meandering stream, its path shaped by the natural contours of the land. Its slow, winding course often led to flooding and swampy conditions, hindering development in the growing city of Hamburg. In the early 20th century, a joint effort between Hamburg and Prussia sought to tame the Tarpenbek. The goal was to straighten its course and deepen its bed, thus increasing the flow rate and lowering the groundwater level in surrounding areas. The project commenced in 1930, employing hundreds of workers as part of a work-creation initiative during the Great Depression. Using only shovels and pumps, these laborers toiled for two years, reshaping the Tarpenbek into a more manageable waterway. The transformation had its intended effect, opening up new land for development. But the increased flow rate also caused erosion, necessitating the construction of stone barriers and rock reinforcements. The Tarpenbek faced further alterations with the expansion of Hamburg Airport. In 1947, a two-kilometer stretch was rerouted westward. Later, during the mid-1950s, sections of the Tarpenbek were enclosed in pipes to accommodate the airport’s runways. These interventions significantly impacted the ecosystem, displacing plants and animals and diminishing water quality. Thankfully, a shift towards environmental consciousness in the 1980s brought about efforts to renature the Tarpenbek. By 2014, three new meanders were created in the upper course, slowing the flow and encouraging the return of native flora and fauna. Today, the Tarpenbek tells a story of transformation, resilience, and the ongoing efforts to balance urban development with ecological harmony. It’s a reminder that even seemingly small streams like the Tarpenbek play a vital role in the urban landscape.
