Two leaves made of concrete reach for the sky. This is the M. G. Ramachandran Memorial Arch. We stand at the entrance to a place of remembrance. It honors a man who was larger than life. M. G. Ramachandran was an actor who became Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
The M. G. Ramachandran Memorial Arch marks the entrance to the M. G. R. Memorial complex. This space on Marina Beach is dedicated to his memory. M. G. R. was not just a politician. He was a cultural icon. His fans saw him as a revolutionary leader.
M. G. R. passed away in December 1987. His death caused widespread grief and chaos. His body was laid to rest here on Marina Beach. Close to the memorial of his mentor C. N. Annadurai.
The M. G. Ramachandran Memorial construction began in 1988. Janaki Ramachandran M. G. R.’s wife inaugurated it in May 1990. In 1992, J. Jayalalithaa remodeled the memorial. She had it laid with marble.
Later renovations added features such as a fountain and waterfall. There were also decorative lamps. An overhead tower with lights was added. Two pergolas and ramps for the physically challenged were constructed.
The entrance has a tall arch. It features a concrete replica of the Two Leaves symbol. This is the symbol of M. G. R.’s political party. A bronze sculpture of Pegasus stands nearby. It is the winged horse of Greek mythology.
The M. G. Ramachandran Memorial complex covers 8.25 acres. It attracts many visitors. People come to pay their respects. They reflect on M. G. R.’s legacy. His influence on Tamil Nadu remains strong.
J. Jayalalithaa M. G. R.’s protege was also buried here after her death in 2016. Her memorial is shaped like a phoenix. It symbolizes her rise and impact on Tamil Nadu politics. The M. G. R. and Amma Memorial complex stands as a testament to their enduring legacy. It is a place of remembrance for two iconic leaders.
