Ennin’s legacy echoes through the serene Raigō-in Temple. Here in the tranquil village of Ohara, nestled in the hills northeast of Kyoto, stands this testament to the enduring power of shōmyō, Tendai Buddhist chanting. Raigō-in Temple isn’t just a temple. It is a sanctuary of sound, a place where ancient melodies intertwine with the whispers of history. Founded in the mid-9th century by Ennin, the third head of the Tendai sect, Raigō-in Temple was established as a training ground for this unique form of musical worship. Ennin, also known as Jikaku Daishi, brought shōmyō back from China, planting its seeds in Japanese soil. He named the area Gyōzan after the temple where he studied in China. Imagine the monks, their voices rising and falling in harmonious prayer, shaping the very landscape of Japanese music. The temple’s main hall, a survivor of fires and time, houses three remarkable statues. These wooden figures of Yakushi Nyorai (the Medicine Buddha), Amida Buddha, and Gautama Buddha date back to the Fujiwara period (894-1185). They are almost 1,000 years old. Above them, the ceiling depicts Buddhist angels from the Pure Land, surrounded by celestial instruments. The spirit of Ryonin also pervades Raigō-in. This 12th-century monk revitalized the temple after it fell into disrepair. He also founded yuzu nenbutsu, a practice that transformed the individual prayer of nenbutsu into a prayer for the entire world. A humble stone pagoda behind the main hall marks Ryonin’s final resting place, a quiet tribute to his enduring influence. Every Sunday at 1 p.m., the tradition of shōmyō continues to resonate within the main hall. If you’re fortunate enough to be here then, close your eyes and listen. You’ll hear not just chanting, but the echoes of centuries, the unbroken thread connecting us to Ennin, Ryonin, and the timeless power of Raigō-in Temple.
