This isn’t just a sports hall it’s a vibrant hub of athletic activity in Erfurt. The Hartwig-Gauder-Halle, as it’s also known, sits in the south of Erfurt. It is conveniently located near the B4, a feeder road to the A4 freeway. This makes it easily accessible. The Sporthalle is part of the Erfurt-Süd sports center.
Around the Sporthalle, you will find other sports facilities. These include a multifunctional arena, an ice sports center, the Thuringia Hall, and the South Swimming Hall. Also nearby are the Thuringian Parliament and the South Park. The location makes it a center for both sport and community.
The Sporthalle itself is impressive. It covers approximately 9,200 square meters. The hall reaches a maximum length of 135 meters and a width of 77 meters. The usable indoor sports area is about 5,700 square meters. This vast space accommodates a variety of athletic pursuits.
Inside the Sporthalle, athletes train and compete. A 200-meter running track with four synthetic lanes circles the hall. A 130-meter sprint track with six lanes allows for speed training. There is also a 60-meter sprint track, also with six lanes. The Sporthalle has competition facilities for long jump and triple jump. High jump, pole vault, and shot put are also accommodated. Training facilities for javelin and discus throw complete the picture.
Beyond the main arena, the Sporthalle includes practical amenities. There are two weight rooms for strength training. Four locker rooms provide space for athletes to prepare. A medical area with a sauna and underwater massage helps with recovery. There are also rooms for staff and judges, supporting the smooth operation of events.
Spectators can cheer on their favorite athletes from the grandstand. It offers 950 seats on the west side. An existing mobile grandstand adds another 820 seats. This ensures ample viewing space for major competitions.
Getting to the Sporthalle is easy. Public transport is close by. The streetcar stop is just 300 meters away. Parking is also convenient. You can park at Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Straße 2.
While visiting, keep a few things in mind. Wardrobe services are available. Pets are not allowed. The Sporthalle is not generally accessible for free public access. Bicycle stands are available. Sanitation facilities include toilets and disabled toilets. If you plan to take photos, note that a photo license fee is required.
