Gazing at Elephant Rock here in Shen’ao, it’s hard to believe it once resembled its namesake. Before December 16th, 2023, this rock formation was a majestic sight. It was shaped like an elephant dipping its trunk into the sea. A popular spot for photographers, kayakers, and snorkelers. The rock itself was a testament to time. Formed from sandstone and sedimentary rock between 10 and 20 million years ago. It was pushed from the sea along with northern Taiwan thousands of years ago. The elephant’s distinctive shape was a result of natural erosion. The softer sandstone eroded faster, creating the unique trunk and head. Until the year 2000, this entire area was a protected military base. After its opening to the public, Elephant Rock quickly became a beloved landmark on the north coast. It was a striking figure against the backdrop of the sea and sky. Sadly, the very forces that sculpted this natural wonder also led to its demise. The relentless erosion finally took its toll. The trunk crumbled and fell into the sea, leaving a gap in the coastal landscape. Even though the iconic trunk is gone, you can still visit Shen’ao. The surrounding area offers stunning views. You can still imagine the majestic elephant that once stood here. A reminder of the constant change in nature’s grand design.
