How many stories do these walls hold? Caserma Montello stands before us, a silent sentinel of Milan’s history. This imposing military complex, with its austere yet elegant design, dates back to the early 20th century. Construction of Caserma Montello began in 1910, a time when Milan was rapidly growing and modernizing. Designed by Lieutenant Colonel Garibaldi and built by the Genio Militare, the barracks were initially intended for the Italian Cavalry. The complex was strategically positioned near Corso Sempione, a bustling artery of the city. Today, Caserma Montello sprawls across a vast area. Its rectangular layout centers around a large parade ground, now transformed into a soccer field. The main building, an imposing three-story structure with robust arched entrances, stretches along Via Caracciolo. This building housed the barracks’ primary functions, including accommodation and offices. Smaller buildings, originally used as warehouses and other support facilities, are arranged around the perimeter, facing Via Arimondi. Over the years, Caserma Montello has witnessed significant historical events and played various roles. During World War I and World War II, it served as a strategic military base. Later, it housed the 1st Regiment of Transmissions until their move to Caserma Santa Barbara. The future of this historic complex has been the subject of much discussion. Plans have been proposed to transform the barracks into a police station, a new campus for the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, and even a refugee reception center. Regardless of its future, Caserma Montello stands as a testament to Milan’s rich history. It’s a place where the echoes of marching soldiers and the stories of a bygone era linger in the air.
