Đức Thánh Cha Đa Minh Maria Trần Đình Thụ, born in 1906, felt a calling early in life. He was baptized just days after his birth, received First Communion during Easter in 1914, and pledged himself to God in 1915. His path led him to the seminary and eventually to his ordination as a priest in 1937. While serving as a professor at the Đại Chủng viện Quân Phương, he received what he believed to be divine inspiration. It was April 4, 1941, the day of Đức Mẹ Đau Thương, when the idea of founding a new congregation took root. The Đất thánh Dòng Mẹ Chúa Cứu Chuộc, also known as the Congregation of the Mother Coredemptrix, became his life’s work. He began gathering followers at his parish in Dưỡng A in 1943. The group grew, and in 1948, with the blessing of Đức cha Đa Minh Maria Hồ Ngọc Cẩn, he officially established the Pia Unio. The congregation found its formal structure under Canon Law in 1953 in Bùi Chu, North Vietnam, thanks to the efforts of Đức cha Phêrô Maria Phạm Ngọc Chi. The tumultuous events of 1954 forced the congregation to relocate to the south, finally settling in Thủ Đức, Gia Định in 1956. This marked the beginning of their new chapter, right here at the Đất thánh Dòng Mẹ Chúa Cứu Chuộc. This place isn’t just a cemetery. It’s a testament to faith, perseverance, and the vision of one man who answered a divine call.
