“Brimming”. That’s the word that comes to mind as I stand before the ICF Lake.
ICF Lake, or ICF aeri, is not just a body of water. It’s a testament to Chennai’s resilience and commitment to environmental restoration. This rain-fed reservoir, nestled in Villivakkam and Ayanavaram, is a vital part of the city.
Let’s journey back. Imagine Chennai grappling with drought. Most water bodies were dry. Yet, ICF Lake remained full. This wasn’t accidental. It was the result of dedicated efforts and investment to revive what was once a cesspool.
In the 1930s, ICF Lake served as a drinking water source. Water was filtered and supplied to the region. Sadly, by the 1950s, pollution crept in. Oil waste and stormwater runoff contaminated the reservoir. The drinking water supply was stopped.
Fast forward to 2017. The Integral Coach Factory recognized the lake’s potential. They initiated a ₹10 million project to rejuvenate it. Sludge was removed using dredgers. New fish species were introduced. A walking track was built around the lake. An unauthorized drain was blocked. Sullied water was diverted. Raised filters and sand barriers were installed. Shrubs were de-weeded. Boulders and debris were cleared. Thick vegetation and dead trees were removed and used as manure.
The results were remarkable. The lake’s water quality improved. Aquatic life returned. Migratory birds flocked to the area. Pelicans, painted storks, and kingfishers made it their home. The area transformed into a visual delight.
The ICF Lake measures 450 meters long and 270 meters wide. It is seven meters deep. The pathway around the lake stretches for three kilometers. Seven infiltration wells lie on the lake bed.
Looking ahead, the Integral Coach Factory has even more ambitious plans. A greenhouse is planned. It will house herbal, flower, ornamental, and indoor plants.
The ICF Lake stands as a symbol of hope. It shows how dedicated efforts can transform a polluted water body into a thriving ecosystem. It offers a space for recreation and relaxation. Take a moment to appreciate the calm waters. Listen to the birds. Remember the story of the ICF Lake, a true oasis in Chennai.
