Hidden within Malden, Massachusetts, lies Fellsmere Park. It’s a place of captivating beauty and rich history. Originally a swamp at the foot of the Middlesex Fells, Fellsmere Park’s story began in 1868. Elisha S. Converse, Malden’s first mayor, acquired the land. He established the Boston Rubber Shoe Company, a world-renowned factory. Converse saw the swamp’s potential. He dammed its southern end. This created a reservoir for his factory’s fire protection. This reservoir is now the serene pond we see in Fellsmere Park. Years later, in 1893, Converse had a change of heart. Inspired by journalist Sylvester Baxter, he donated the land to create a public park. The renowned Frederick Law Olmsted, known for Central Park and Boston’s Emerald Necklace, designed Fellsmere Park. Construction began in 1893 and finished in 1899. In 1905, Malden entrusted the park to the Metropolitan Parks Commission. The commission designed the park’s boundary roads in 1913. These roads, West Border Road and Boundary Road, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Fellsmere Park Parkways. Fellsway East also runs through the park, east of the pond. Fellsmere Park isn’t just a place of historical significance. It’s a vibrant part of the community. In winter, the hill known as Seven Bumps becomes a popular sledding spot. Fellsmere Park continues to evolve. A master plan from 2021 proposes enhancements like accessible walkways, new entry points, and improved amenities. The plan prioritizes preserving the natural woodlands and enhancing biodiversity. Fellsmere Park. It’s a testament to Converse’s vision, Olmsted’s design, and the community’s enduring spirit. A visit to Fellsmere Park is a journey through time. It’s a reminder of the power of transformation from swamp to sanctuary.
