What does it mean to live under the dead? This intriguing question leads us to the Al-Zawya, a place with a story as unique as its name. Al-Zawya, meaning “the corner” in Arabic, is more than just a geographical term. It represents a place where people gather, particularly those following the Sufi tradition.

Nestled outside the Old City walls, between Damascus Gate and Herod’s Gate, Al-Zawya stands near the bustling bus station. Look for its two minarets, a beacon amidst the modern buildings that now surround it. Established during the Mamluk era, Al-Zawya al-Adhamiyya, to give its full name, speaks of a rich Sufi history.

While much of its original structure has faded, you can still glimpse remnants of the past in the room above the grotto entrance. This grotto, a hidden gem adjacent to the Al-Zawya, holds a special significance. Described whimsically by the historian Mujir al-Din as “the living under the dead”, it lies beneath the al-Sahira cemetery, a poignant reminder of life’s constant cycle.

Today, Al-Zawya thrives as an active place of worship. Its mosque, expanded and renovated, welcomes worshippers, while a large ablution facility and kindergarten speak to its role as a community hub. Al-Zawya al-Adhamiyya stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community, a place where the echoes of history mingle with the vibrancy of the present.
