Wow Look at those colors! That’s the Palms Community Mural. It’s a giant canvas of vibrant hues. It’s not just pretty though. This mural tells a story. A story of community effort. A story of transforming a neglected wall.
The Palms Neighborhood Council saw this blank wall. It was on Palms Boulevard and Overland Avenue. It needed some serious love. Nick Greif the council president in 2016 made it a priority. After getting approval from the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs the project began.
Beautify Earth got involved. They knew just the people to prep the wall. Skanska USA a construction company stepped up. This was no small task. The wall is huge about 150 feet long and 30 feet high. It had over 20 layers of old paint. Imagine the work involved removing all that grime.
Skanska workers carefully scraped and power washed. They even used 20 gallons of white sealer. They protected parked cars and pedestrians. This wasn’t just a mural project it was a community project.
The design was chosen from many proposals. DJ Neff and The Wolf Counsel won with a playful design. It features oversized local animals. Think a purple owl a honey bee a pink rabbit and a parrot.
Over 150 community members joined a paint day. They helped the artists paint the base layers. They finished an hour early That shows the community spirit.
The mural isn’t just art. It’s a symbol of community pride. It shows the Palms neighborhood’s identity. It shows that the neighborhood council works to improve the area.
