From ashes to glory. That’s the story of the Ιερός Ναός Εσταυρωμένου, also known as the Church of Saint Irene. This grand church stands before you, a testament to resilience and rebirth. Located on Aiolou Street, the Church of Saint Irene has witnessed pivotal moments in Athens’ history.

The original Byzantine-era church on this site served as a vital hub for the Greek Orthodox community during Ottoman rule. Imagine the hushed prayers and fervent hopes within its ancient walls. Sadly, during the Greek War of Independence, this sanctuary suffered severe damage. Only the facade survived the devastating fire.

Yet, like a phoenix, a new church arose. When Athens became the capital of the newly independent Greek kingdom in 1832, the Church of Saint Irene briefly served as the city’s cathedral. It hosted significant events, including King Otto’s coming-of-age celebration in 1835. Interestingly, the ship carrying his crown and scepter was delayed. The ceremony proceeded without these traditional symbols of royalty. The church also witnessed the first national anniversary celebration in 1838 and the funeral of Theodoros Kolokotronis, a prominent leader of the Greek revolution, in 1843.

To accommodate the growing city, architect Lysandros Kaftanzoglou was commissioned to reconstruct the church. Construction began in 1846, and the Church of Saint Irene was inaugurated in 1850. The interior decoration, a masterpiece by iconographer Spyridon Hatzigiannopoulos, was completed between 1879 and 1892. The church is a blend of architectural styles, a harmonious fusion of Renaissance and Byzantine elements. Notice the two bell towers, a neoclassical touch. The three-aisled basilica, with its dome and double side naves, creates a sense of grandeur. Inside, admire the gilded iconostasis, a gift from Nicholas of Russia. The murals depict scenes from the Bible and the life of Jesus and the Apostle Paul. The decorated ceiling panels, considered Kaftanzoglou’s finest work, are also noteworthy.

The Church of Saint Irene continued to be the metropolitan church until 1862, witnessing the doxology for the granting of autocephaly to the Church of Greece in 1850. It has remained a symbol of faith and resilience, even enduring the Magoula earthquake in 2019, which caused the cross on the dome to collapse. As you stand before the Church of Saint Irene, remember its journey from ashes to glory. It is a story etched in the heart of Athens, a symbol of the enduring spirit of its people.
