Sunlight dappled through the leaves of Nageswara Rao Park. This wasn’t just any park. It was a living history. Originally a large pond called Arathakuttai it transformed. Generous donors Ramayamma Pantulu Aravamutha Iyengar and Nainiappa Mudaliar gave it to the Chennai Corporation. The park became a gift to the community. It was named in honor of Desodharaka Nageswara Rao Pantulu. The then Chief Minister P S Kumaraswamy Raja officially opened it on October 20 1940.

Nageswara Rao Park’s story is one of expansion and community spirit. More land was donated that same year. Ramayee Ammal M Nainappa Mudaliyar V Kumaraswamy Raja Vinjamur Govindarajachari and Aravamadhu Iyengar all contributed. The park grew from a small area along Luz Church Road to its current four acres.

In 1996 the Chennai Corporation took over. They redeveloped Nageswara Rao Park. The old Aaratha kuttai pond became a beautiful garden. It is more than just green space.
