Polluted and largely inaccessible today Westchester Creek once held a far grander significance. Its waters witnessed the first permanent European settlement in the Bronx. Thomas Pell and his settlers arrived in 1654 establishing Westchester Square at the creek’s navigable head. This marked a pivotal moment in the Bronx’s history.

Westchester Creek however was more than just a historical landmark. It was once a much larger waterway. It extended further inland almost reaching Eastchester Bay. Heavy storms even turned Throggs Neck into an island. Sadly much of the creek’s original route was filled in during development. Structures like the New York City Subway’s Westchester Yard and the Hutchinson Metro Center now stand where the creek once flowed freely. Today its head is near Herbert H Lehman High School.

The creek’s story isn’t just about land reclamation. It’s also about environmental degradation. Years of heavy industrial use have severely polluted Westchester Creek. Its polluted waters stand in stark contrast to its rich past. Yet hope remains. In 2014 the Friends of Ferry Point Park proposed a $100 million restoration project. This ambitious plan aimed to revive both Westchester and Pugsley Creeks. While the creek remains polluted its fish species persist. Anglers still seek out brook trout striped bass striped searobin largemouth bass and tub gurnard. They cast their lines hoping to catch a glimpse of the creek’s past glory.

The once majestic Westchester Creek a vital part of the Bronx’s history remains a reminder of both human impact and nature’s enduring resilience. Its story a tale of both loss and potential for renewal deserves our attention. Its present state however leaves much to be desired. The restoration project may bring back some of its former glory but the scars of industrialization remain. Despite its struggles Westchester Creek stands as a powerful symbol of the Bronx’s past present and future.
