Imagine children streaming through these doors since 1899 at Clemens-Brentano Grundschule. This school has witnessed history unfold. Clemens-Brentano Grundschule is located in Lichterfelde. It serves students in grades 1 through 6. The building itself is a protected historical landmark.
Let’s journey back to the late 19th century. Johann Anton Wilhelm von Carstenn had a vision. He wanted to create a fancy neighborhood here. Lichterfelde and Giesensdorf merged in 1877. The growing population needed more schools. Clemens-Brentano Grundschule was originally the 4th municipal school. Tietzen and Pahl designed it. In 1899, 318 students excitedly entered its classrooms.
By 1914, Clemens-Brentano Grundschule bustled with 846 students in 19 classes. World War I brought disruption. Almost all male teachers went to war. In December 1915, the school closed. Military forces used the building. Clemens-Brentano Grundschule and other schools became shelters for returning soldiers in 1918. Classes were severely limited. Students attended classes elsewhere for a few months. The school later became the 13th Volksschule.
World War II again interrupted learning. But Clemens-Brentano Grundschule survived undamaged. After the war classes resumed. Teachers were scarce so students attended in shifts.
A significant change happened in August 1968. The school was renamed Clemens-Brentano Grundschule. That same year they opened a new extension. The district recognized its importance in April 2019. Clemens-Brentano Grundschule was named a “Monument of the Month.”
What is school life like today? From the third grade children can choose English or French as a first foreign language. Interesting electives are offered. These project-based classes last for a semester or a year. After school care is also available.
Clemens-Brentano Grundschule offers many after-school activities. Sports enthusiasts can join basketball or soccer. There are also track and field and general sports clubs. Music lovers might enjoy the choir or recorder group. Dance groups are also available. Other options include a circus club and a computer club. Budding chefs can join the cooking and baking club.
The school hosts regular events. These include a music night and a Christmas market. The summer festival is always a highlight.
In 2016 and 2017 Clemens-Brentano Grundschule had 453 students. Today the school continues its mission. It provides education and a sense of community.
Many notable people attended Clemens-Brentano Grundschule. These include radio host Lord Knud and TV presenter Günther Jauch. Even soccer player Eroll Zejnullahu walked these halls.
