Bolívar’s dream crystallized into bronze right here. This is the Monumento a Simón Bolívar. It stands as a lasting tribute to a pivotal figure in Latin American history.

The Monumento a Simón Bolívar commemorates Simón Bolívar. He was known as “El Libertador”. He was a key figure in the emancipation of several Latin American nations. The monument features a bronze equestrian statue. It is set atop a stone pedestal.

Let’s delve into the story behind this monument. Its creation was not without its challenges. Earlier attempts to honor Bolívar in Madrid faltered. These initiatives dated back to 1922. One ambitious proposal even envisioned a massive 100-meter high structure.

In the 1960s, Carlos Arias Navarro, Antonio Aparisi Mocholí, and Luis Sánchez Agesta revitalized the project. They entrusted the design to Spanish sculptor Emilio Laíz Campos. Funding for the Monumento a Simón Bolívar came from the Bolivarian nations.

Now, observe the details of the bronze sculpture. Bolívar is depicted riding his horse. He raises his right arm in a commanding gesture. The horse lifts its front right leg. Interestingly, the equine figure was modeled after a horse owned by Ángel Peralta Pineda. Laíz created additional replicas of the statue. These were sent to Colombia and Venezuela.

The statue rests on a plinth. It is made of white stone from Colmenar de Oreja. A granite basement supports it. The Monumento a Simón Bolívar reaches a total height of 7.50 meters.

Initially placed in the Parque del Oeste in 1968, it was officially inaugurated on October 28, 1970. Soon after, the monument was moved to a new spot within the park. Three new plaques were added to the pedestal during this relocation. The front plaque proudly proclaims “Simón Bolívar – Libertador – de Venezuela – Colombia – Panamá – Ecuador – Perú – Bolivia – 1783-1830”.

However, the Monumento a Simón Bolívar has faced some controversy. In 2020 and 2022 vandals attacked the statue. The vandals daubed red paint on the statue. They wrote hateful words on it. Despite these incidents, the monument stands tall.

The monument stands not only as a work of art. It also serves as a focal point for remembrance. It’s a place for reflection. It embodies the shared history between Spain and the nations Bolívar helped liberate.

So, as we conclude our visit to the Monumento a Simón Bolívar, consider the weight of history. Feel the enduring spirit of liberation. Remember the complex relationship between Spain and the Americas. This statue encapsulates it all.
