Recall the days when this park was a humble allotment garden. The Gartenschlauch Sculpture stands tall. It serves as a vibrant reminder of Freiburg’s past.

The Gartenschlauch Sculpture is not just metal and paint. It is a testament to art’s ability to transform public spaces. This striking artwork by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen was erected in 1983. It marks the construction of the vocational school center and Eschholzpark.

The artists aimed to capture the essence of the demolished allotment garden. They achieved this with a massive red hosepipe. It measures 10 meters high and 84 meters long. The Gartenschlauch Sculpture includes a tap to complete the image.

The City of Freiburg held an art competition in 1980. Oldenburg and van Bruggen’s design won. However, realizing the vision took two more years. The production was complex.

Mannesmann, a steelworks in Mülheim, took on the challenge. Their plant engineer had to invent a new bending process. This process bent the 30 hose parts in two directions simultaneously. A model from the artists served as the steelworkers’ guide.

A special transporter then brought the sculpture’s components to Freiburg. The project cost 400,000 Deutschmarks. The city funded it as art in architecture for the vocational school center.

Oldenburg’s art often engages with its surroundings. It tells stories of the past in a modern context. The Gartenschlauch Sculpture is no exception. It prompts us to reflect on what was lost. It makes us think about what has been gained.

The sculpture is a familiar object made extraordinary. Oldenburg and van Bruggen transformed the mundane into the monumental. Their work encourages viewers to see the world with fresh eyes.

The Gartenschlauch Sculpture enriches Freiburg’s landscape. It sparks conversations. It invites contemplation. It connects the community to its history. It embodies the spirit of public art. It is accessible to everyone.

Take a moment to appreciate the Gartenschlauch Sculpture. Think about the blend of art, history, and engineering. It is all embodied in this playful yet profound work. Consider how everyday objects can become sources of wonder.
