“Lost in the labyrinth of time, Ardegão was once a freguesia.” Today we stand where the freguesia of Ardegão once stood. It was a part of Ponte de Lima. Ardegão existed until January 28, 2013. That day marked a reorganization. The administrative changes affected the parishes. Ardegão was joined with Freixo and Mato. The new parish became Ardegão, Freixo e Mato. The headquarters are in Freixo.

Ardegão covered 3.02 square kilometers. In 2011, 233 people lived here. That means there were about 77 people per square kilometer. Imagine the quiet life here.

Let us look back. In 1864, Ardegão had 224 residents. The population grew to 244 by 1890. In 1950, it peaked at 360 people. Then the numbers began to fall. By 2011 only 233 remained.

Think about the age groups. In 2001, almost 10% of the population was children under 14. About 11% were young adults. Over half were adults between 25 and 64. Seniors made up just over 17%. A decade later, things shifted. The percentage of children dropped. The percentage of seniors increased to over 22%. These numbers tell a story of change.

Ardegão may be gone as an independent parish. Yet its story remains. It is a story of people and how they lived. It connects to the history of Ponte de Lima. The winds whisper tales of this village. They speak of times gone by. They speak of Ardegão’s legacy. It continues in the new parish. It lives in the hearts of the people.

Today, Ardegão is more than a memory. It is a reminder of Portugal’s past. It is a lesson in how communities evolve. So take a moment. Remember Ardegão. Remember its people. Remember its place in history.
