The clock wasn’t always as you see it today. Originally, a horse trough graced its base, complete with a drinking fountain for people and a plaque bearing the image of Queen Victoria. The clock’s intricate design, cast by Walter Macfarlane & Co. at the Saracen Works in Glasgow, is shared by only one other known clock in the world: the Hastings Clock in Rotherham, England. This 8-day clock marvel originally operated with a weight descending within the column, and its four faces were illuminated by small gas jets. Today, both the clock mechanism and the lights have been electrified, seamlessly blending the old with the new. Look closely at the details.
