Four and a half million bricks. That’s how many it took to build the Fort de Seclin. Can you imagine the sheer scale of that undertaking? Right here before you stands a testament to 19th-century military engineering. The Fort de Seclin isn’t just a fort it’s a story etched in brick and mortar.

Built between 1873 and 1875 this imposing structure was part of a larger defensive system surrounding Lille. General Séré de Rivières a name synonymous with French fortification projects spearheaded its creation. Following France’s defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871 these new forts were meant to deter future German aggression. The Fort de Seclin was designed to house up to 800 soldiers. It even boasted its own bakery and infirmary. A self-sufficient fortress capable of withstanding a lengthy siege.

But military technology marches on. By the late 19th century the Fort de Seclin’s design was already becoming obsolete. Heavy artillery could easily breach its walls. Even so the fort played a critical role during World War I. Initially deemed strategically unimportant by the invading German army it nonetheless became a key supply point for German forces on the front lines. A Bavarian regiment occupied the fort. It provided support to their operations between Vimy and Arras.

Imagine the sounds of war echoing through those very walls. The constant dread the relentless shelling. The Fort de Seclin would eventually be liberated by British troops on October 17 1918. Two young British soldiers however gave their lives in the process. Their names Herbert William Hicks and Walter Thompson are forever memorialized in a cemetery at Templemars.

The fort’s history doesn’t end there. During World War II the Fort de Seclin served as an annex to the Loos prison. Sixty-nine Resistance fighters including members of the Ascq sabotage group were executed there between June 7 and August 24 1944. Their sacrifice is a stark reminder of the fort’s complex and sometimes tragic past.

Today the Fort de Seclin has found a new purpose. It stands as a museum preserving the history of cavalry artillery and infantry from 1870 to 1920. The site is also a haven for nature lovers. Ten hectares of land are teeming with life. Orchids swallows birds of prey and countless insects all thrive within its protective walls. The Boniface family who acquired the fort in 1996 has painstakingly restored it and now shares its captivating history with visitors from around the world. The Fort de Seclin a monument to war a sanctuary for nature a living museum. It is a story worth exploring.
