A colossal structure it stands before us. This is the Deutschlandhaus. Its story is one of rebirth. A phoenix rising from the ashes.

The original Deutschlandhaus was a marvel of 1920s architecture. Designed by Fritz Block and Ernst Hochfeld it was a bustling hub. Offices a department store and even Europe’s largest cinema the Ufa-Palast with 2700 seats. Imagine the glamour the excitement. The crowds.

Then came World War II. The Deutschlandhaus burned. Partially destroyed in 1944 it stood scarred a testament to war’s devastation. The British occupation forces seized it. They rebuilt it renaming it Hamburg House. The grand cinema was gone forever. They used it for housing and supplies. Dancing halls and kitchens brought a different kind of life to its halls.

In 1952 the British left. The name Deutschlandhaus was reclaimed. It endured further changes. Renovations from 1975 to 1982 modernized the building. Some say the updates weren’t kind to its unique character. The original brick facade was altered. The iconic building was not protected as a landmark. This is important to note. It wasn’t officially deemed historically significant.

In 2014 the ABG Real Estate Group bought the Deutschlandhaus. Controversy erupted. Demolition plans were announced in 2017. Experts mourned the loss of this rare example of Streamline Moderne architecture. Yet the building was not protected. It was gone by 2019.

Now we stand before its successor. A new Deutschlandhaus opened in 2024. Architect Hadi Teherani designed it. A nod to the past with a modern twist. It houses the Hamburger Sparkasse’s headquarters. There are apartments shops and even a stunning 1200 square meter palm hall under a 40 meter dome.

The Deutschlandhaus. A story of creation destruction and remarkable renewal. A symbol of Hamburg’s resilience.
