Located at the northern end of Wissahickon Valley Park, the Wissahickon Environmental Center, or Tree House, has been an educational hub for over 30 years. This charming, century-old farmhouse got its nickname from a giant sycamore tree. The tree once grew right through the porch.
Imagine a tree growing through a house. That’s the story of the Tree House. The building was constructed around a large sycamore over a century ago. Over time the porch and roof were built around it. You can even see the stump where the tree once stood.
Before becoming a park, the grounds were a tree nursery from the 1880s to 1961. Today a mix of native and non-native trees still grow here. Trish Fries, an environmental education program specialist says the center has a homey vibe. It’s like a little house in the woods she says.
Inside the Wissahickon Environmental Center, you will discover turtles, fish, preserved animals and historical pictures. The center also hosts public programs. Student education programs and summer camps are available. Hikers and dog walkers frequent the area.
The woods surrounding the Wissahickon Environmental Center are a typical Pennsylvania forest. Beech, oak and maple trees abound. A short walk from the center leads you to the oldest beech tree in Pennsylvania. It is known as the giant beech tree.
Visitors can also explore the Andorra meadow. This is one of the last remaining natural areas in the city. A two-mile trail loops around the meadow and through the forest.
In 2012, the meadow underwent a restoration. The goal was to remove invasive plants and reclaim meadow space. This effort helped attract bird species and birdwatchers.
Finding the Wissahickon Environmental Center can be a bit of a challenge. However its somewhat isolated location also offers a benefit. It is quieter than more well-known spots like Forbidden Drive.
