Picture a sweeping curve. This is Whitegates. It’s more than just a bend in the road. Whitegates is a legendary corner on the Snaefell Mountain Course. This course is famously used for the Isle of Man TT and Manx Grand Prix motorcycle races.

Whitegates sits near the 24th milestone. This milestone marks the distance from the race’s start and finish line. The historic 15th milestone is also nearby. This one shows the distance from Douglas to Ramsey. The name Whitegates itself is quite evocative. It comes from two former white gates. These gates stood at the entrance of Claughbane Road and the nearby Claughbane Farm.

Think of the roaring engines. Feel the thrill of the race. Whitegates wasn’t always associated with motorbikes. This bend played a role in earlier races. It was part of the Highland Course and the Four Inch Course. These were used for car races like the Gordon Bennett Trial and RAC Tourist Trophy. These races took place between 1904 and 1922. Whitegates became part of the Snaefell Mountain Course in 1911 for the TT races. In 1923 it was added to the Manx Grand Prix.

Today Whitegates serves another purpose. It’s the starting point for the Lhergy Frissell hillclimb. This is part of the Manx Classic Hill Climb events. Imagine the echoes of past races. Feel the energy of those brave drivers and riders. Whitegates is a place steeped in history. It’s a place where speed and skill are tested. It’s a testament to the Isle of Man’s enduring love of motorsport. More than just a corner Whitegates is a legend. A legend etched into the very road itself.
