Across the flatlands, a silent sentinel stands against the sky. The Moulin Soete, a windmill with a story as dramatic as the winds it once harnessed. The Moulin Soete isn’t just a picturesque landmark. It’s a testament to resilience, a phoenix of the Flanders fields. Built in 1850, the Moulin Soete originally stood in Messines. It was later moved to Ten-Brielen. Its wings didn’t just grind grain. They relayed messages to neighboring towns. Imagine the sight, those giant sails spelling out coded words across the landscape. Sadly, this era of ingenuity met a tragic end in 1914. The First World War swept across the land, and the Moulin Soete was destroyed by German forces. But like a seed buried in the earth, the Moulin Soete held the promise of rebirth. Dominique Soete, a man with a vision, began its reconstruction. He gathered pieces from the windmills of Flers, a French town, and Comines France. Like a patchwork quilt woven with history, the Moulin Soete rose again. The Soete family nurtured the mill for 46 years. Then the city of Comines-Warneton recognized its value and purchased it from the last miller, Jean-Baptiste Soete. Jean-Baptiste, born within the mill’s shadow, had spent his entire life there, helping his father rebuild it piece by piece. Maintaining the Moulin Soete became a costly endeavor. Faced with financial constraints, Comines-Warneton decided to sell it. The city of Bruges made the highest bid and began dismantling the mill for relocation. But Comines-Warneton, unwilling to part with its iconic landmark, took Bruges to court and won. The Moulin Soete returned home. However, time and the elements took their toll. The Moulin Soete deteriorated, leading Comines-Warneton to donate it to the Ministry of the French Community in 1975 for restoration. To facilitate the process, the mill was moved in 1981 to its current location along the RN58. The restoration was completed, and the Moulin Soete was inaugurated in 1987. Tragedy struck again in 1997 when an arsonist’s flames reduced the Moulin Soete to ashes. But the spirit of the mill could not be extinguished. The community rallied, and in 1999, Jean Bruggeman, a mill specialist, and Joseph Demuysère, an architect from Comines-Warneton, were chosen to rebuild it. The Moulin Soete, a replica of its former self, was reborn. The first element of this new mill was laid in 2001. Today, the Moulin Soete stands tall once more. Its three stories house the miller’s living quarters, a grain store, a flour sifter, and the mighty grinding stones. It’s a reminder that even in the face of destruction, the winds of change can bring renewal.
