Here in Kelvinside, have you ever heard the locals jest about a “Kelvinsaide” accent? It’s a playful jab at the area’s reputation for affluence. Kelvinside is a district in Glasgow. It sits north of the River Clyde. It is bordered by Broomhill, Dowanhill, and Hyndland to the south. Kelvindale and the River Kelvin mark its northern boundary. The district is known for its grand Victorian villas and terraces.

Now, let’s talk about Kelvinside’s past. North Kelvinside, shares a parliamentary constituency with Maryhill. But Kelvinside definitely has a different vibe. The district was once part of a country estate. Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman, a Liberal prime minister, was born here.

In the mid to late 19th century, the estate was transformed. Streets, crescents, and townhouses were constructed. The Glasgow Botanic Gardens moved here in 1839. They outgrew their original location off Sauchiehall Street. Initially, the gardens were only open to the public on weekends. There was a one-penny entrance fee.

Did you know that Kelvinside railway station was once a vital transport hub? It sat on the Lanarkshire and Dunbartonshire Railway. Sadly, it is now closed.

At the corner of Kirklee Road and Great Western Road, there once stood a shop called Churchill’s. Locals affectionately knew it as the “Greenie.” It started as a small green hut. In the 1990s, it was replaced by a two-story stone building. Even with its new look, pupils of Kelvinside Academy still called it the Greenie. It closed during COVID. Now, it is a delicatessen and restaurant.

Kelvinside is home to Kelvinside Academy. It is a private school at the corner of Kirklee Road and Bellshaugh Road.

Great Western Terrace, designed by Alexander “Greek” Thomson, stands proudly on Great Western Road. Westbourne Terrace, another Thomson creation, graces Hyndland Road.

North Kelvinside boasts beautiful architecture. It offers enviable green spaces, great cafes, and shops. It is no wonder the neighborhood remains popular. Bohemians, families, and students all love it. Robbie Coltrane, Lynne Ramsey, and members of Glasgow bands have called Kelvinside home.

Take a stroll through North Kelvinside Meadow. Once threatened by developers, locals fought to save this green space. Today, it thrives as a vibrant community garden. The uplifting story has inspired communities worldwide.

Kelvinside is a place where history and community intertwine. From its grand architecture to its vibrant green spaces, Kelvinside offers a unique glimpse into Glasgow’s rich tapestry.
