Marundhu means medicine. Eswarar means God. It’s said that sage Valmiki the author of the Ramayana worshipped Shiva here. He was blessed. The place was once called Thiruvalmikiyur. It slowly changed to Thiruvanmiyur. You can still find Valmiki Nagar nearby a testament to this connection.
