Imagine a world where a school doubled as a holiday home for young girls and then transformed into a place to treat children battling tuberculosis. This is the tale of Sancta Maria College in Rathfarnham, Dublin. It all started in 1932. The McCabe sisters gifted their beautiful estate to the Sisters of Mercy. The order used the estate as a holiday home for girls, but the world had other plans. In 1942, Archbishop McQuaid saw an opportunity in this grand home. The Red Cross Society was searching for a place to treat kids suffering from tuberculosis. The estate became a Preventorium for sixteen years. In 1959, tuberculosis was finally under control, but a fresh need emerged in this growing area. The need for education. On 8 September 1960, Sancta Maria College, a boarding, senior day, and junior private school, was opened. The school grew rapidly. Today, it boasts 580 students and 42 teachers. The school has gone through many transformations since its humble beginnings but has continued to serve the community. It’s a college with a rich history, standing as a testament to the changing times and the unwavering dedication of the Sisters of Mercy to education. You are standing in front of the legacy of a community dedicated to learning and compassion.
