Fifty-one men. That’s how many founded Mount Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church of Detroit on June 4 1882. Imagine the scene. Forty-one were recent German immigrants mostly from West Prussia now part of Poland. Ten hailed from Immanuel a mother congregation. This wasn’t just a church. It was a beacon for a community of new arrivals seeking solace and connection in a foreign land. Mount Zion Lutheran Church was built upon their shared faith and hope.
The first church building a 700-seat wooden structure with a tall steeple was dedicated on July 8 1883. But it was more than just a place of worship. It housed a school. Within a few years Mount Zion Lutheran Church boasted almost 500 pupils. It was the largest Lutheran school in all of America. This small wooden church in Detroit became a vibrant hub of community life.
The school’s success speaks volumes about the community’s commitment to education and faith. They even opened a branch school half a mile away to accommodate the growing number of students. It was the largest parish in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. In 1932 the original building was demolished. A new 600-seat neo-Gothic stone edifice was built. The stone? Recycled from the old Detroit Post Office. This new Mount Zion Lutheran Church stands as a testament to resilience and enduring faith.
The three bells installed in 1890 still ring today. They’ve witnessed countless services baptisms confirmations and burials.
