Alright listen. Have you heard of a football match that paused a war? That is the story of the Christmas Truce Monument. It stands in Frelinghien France. This is where an incredible event unfolded during World War I.

The Christmas Truce Monument marks a series of unofficial ceasefires along the Western Front in December 1914. It happened five months after the start of the war. Exhausted soldiers sought respite from the brutal fighting.

Imagine the scene. It is Christmas Eve. Frost covers the ground. British and German soldiers occupy trenches just a short distance apart. Earlier, the Germans started placing candles on their trenches and Christmas trees. They sang carols. The British responded in kind. They shouted Christmas greetings to each other across the divide.

Here at Frelinghien something extraordinary happened. Men from opposing sides cautiously emerged from their trenches. They met in no man’s land. They exchanged gifts of food tobacco and souvenirs. A temporary peace had broken out.

The Royal Welch Fusiliers faced Prussian Jäger and Saxon infantry here. The Germans occupied Frelinghien village. The Welsh soldiers dug in to the west. This area saw its own unique act of collaboration. The German Jäger offered the Welsh barrels of beer from a local brewery. In return, they received cigarettes and Christmas puddings. Shooting was formally postponed.

Now about that football match. Whilst it is pretty certain that no football match took place at this point on the line. There is an account from Leutnant Johannes Niemann. He suggested a match between the Saxon Infantry Regiment Nr 133 and a Scottish battalion, possibly the Seaforths. The game supposedly took place south of this monument. It would still be within the boundary of the Frelinghien commune. Whether it happened or not remains a matter of debate. The accepted official score was a 3-2 win for the Germans.

The Christmas Truce was not unique to this area. It reflected a widespread desire for peace. Soldiers engaged in conversations and even visited each other’s trenches. These truces highlighted a shared humanity amidst the conflict.

The events at Frelinghien were commemorated on November 11 2008. A plaque was unveiled to mark the Christmas Truce. It is on the spot where the 2nd Battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers met German soldiers. Dignitaries and villagers attended a church service and the unveiling. Military representatives from Wales France and Germany were present.

Adding a unique touch a football match took place that afternoon. The Royal Welsh played the Marienberger Jäger Panzergrenadier Battalion 371. The German soldiers won 2-1. This made the aggregate score 5-3.

The Christmas Truce Monument stands as a reminder. It shows a moment of peace and humanity. It is a symbol of hope amidst the horrors of war. Remember the men who dared to lay down their arms. They chose to celebrate the holiday together. Their story echoes through this field still.
