Established in 1835 a question arises: Can you imagine the countless lives touched by the Madras Medical College? It stands here as one of Asia’s oldest medical colleges. Madras Medical College has a rich history. It began as a humble medical hall. The British East India Company established it to treat its soldiers. This was back in 1647. The college was formalized as a medical school in 1835.

Madras Medical College quickly gained prominence. It became attached to the Government General Hospital. The state sponsored it. By 1850 it earned full college status. It was then christened Madras Medical College. The first students graduated in 1852. They received diplomas from the Madras Medical College. In 1857 the college affiliated with the University of Madras.

Did you know Madras Medical College was briefly an independent university? In 1996 Madras was renamed Chennai. The college was briefly called Chennai Medical College. However it soon reverted to Madras Medical College. Its original name was better known worldwide. In 2000 the college reaffiliated with the Tamil Nadu Dr M.G.R. Medical University. It dropped the “Research Institute” suffix.

Let’s talk about the Red Fort building. This red brick structure dates back to 1897. It’s a Grade I heritage building. For decades it housed the anatomy department. Restoration began in 2017. The Madras Medical College expanded in 2012 with a new campus. It covers 325000 square feet. This new campus was built on the site of the former central prison. Madras Medical College hosts many events. “REVIVALS” is a major inter-college cultural event. “ENCIERRO” is an annual inter-medical sports meet. “KALAIOMA” is an intra-college cultural event. Since 2005 “GENESIS” has been an intercollegiate academic conference.

Many notable figures have passed through Madras Medical College. Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari was a surgeon and president of the Indian National Congress. Muthulakshmi Reddi was one of India’s first female doctors. Numerous alumni have received prestigious awards. They include the Padma Shri and Dr B. C. Roy Award.

Today Madras Medical College continues to thrive. It is managed by the Tamil Nadu government. The college offers a wide range of programs. These include MBBS B. Pharma BPT BSc Nursing MD MS M. Pharma and MSc Nursing. The college has modern facilities. These include Wi-Fi enabled lecture halls and well-equipped labs. There is also a library and a canteen.

Madras Medical College has been consistently ranked among India’s top medical colleges. In 2023 NIRF ranked it 11th for medicine and 74th for pharmacy.
