Elevated above the Chennai bustle, the Anna Flyover has been a silent observer of the city’s evolution since 1973. This iconic structure, also known as the Gemini Flyover, isn’t just a bridge. It’s a testament to Chennai’s growth, a landmark steeped in history. The Anna Flyover was Chennai’s first flyover, the third in all of India, and, upon completion, the longest in the country. It gracefully spans the bustling Gemini Circle, a junction where Anna Salai, formerly Mount Road, intersects with Nungambakkam High Road and Cathedral Road. Imagine the chaos before its construction, over 9,000 vehicles jostling for space during peak hours in the 1970s. The Anna Flyover was a game-changer.

The flyover’s construction is a story in itself. Built by East Coast Construction and Industries, the project took 21 months and cost ₹6.6 million. The engineers, with impressive foresight, designed the Anna Flyover with the possibility of future extensions. Interestingly, the design has remained largely unchanged since the 1970s. Below the flyover, the Gemini Circle holds another piece of history. Two identical statues stand as a reminder of a bygone era. They commemorate the banning of horse racing in Tamil Nadu, a silent tribute to a changing society.

The Anna Flyover’s surroundings are a mix of old and new. Nearby stands the old Safire Theatre complex, a nostalgic landmark for many. The Oxford University Press and the U.S. Consulate also reside in this vibrant neighborhood. Gemini Studios, which gave the area its popular name, has since been replaced by modern structures. Parson Manor, a shopping complex, and The Park, a five-star hotel, now occupy the space. Across the flyover lies Semmozhi Poonga, a lush 20-acre botanical garden. This green oasis offers a stark contrast to the concrete jungle, a testament to Chennai’s appreciation for nature amidst urban development.

The Anna Flyover continues to serve as a vital artery of Chennai. By the 2010s, over 16,000 vehicles traversed the stretch between Parry’s Corner and Nandanam during rush hour. Anna Salai itself sees over 183,000 vehicles daily. The Anna Flyover continues to manage a staggering average of 20,000 vehicles per hour beneath its arms. This enduring landmark has also witnessed its share of dramatic incidents. From a small bomb detonation near the American consulate in 1998 to a bus overturning in 2012, the Anna Flyover has silently observed the city’s triumphs and tragedies. As you stand here today, looking up at this concrete giant, remember, you are not just looking at a flyover. You are looking at a piece of Chennai’s history, a symbol of its progress.
