Established by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1997, The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University stands before us. It is named after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution. The university’s story began with Act No. 43. His Excellency Shri. K.R. Narayanan, then President of India, inaugurated it on September 20, 1997. Dr.Kalaignar Karunanidhi, then Chief Minister of Tamilnadu, was also present. The University started its mission on October 3, 1997.
This institution is not just another law university. It is the first of its kind in South Asia. It is a sui generis affiliating Law University in the country. The Bar Council of India and the University Grants Commission recognize the university. It is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities. The Association of Common Wealth Universities in the U.K. also recognizes it. Furthermore, it is associated with the Indian Institute of Public Administration in New Delhi.
The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University plays a vital role. It acts as the Nodal Agency for the Government. It is dedicated to improving legal education in Tamil Nadu. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) accredited the university. It received a B++ grade in September 2022.
The university has a broad reach. It offers legal education through its campus and affiliated colleges. Fifteen government law colleges across Tamil Nadu are affiliated. These colleges are in Chennai, Madurai, Trichy and Coimbatore. You also find them in Tirunelveli, PattaraiPerambudur, and Pudupakkam. Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Dharmapuri, and Ramanathapuram also host them. Vellore, Theni, Namakkal, Salem and Karaikudi complete the list. Additionally, nine private law colleges are affiliated with the university. These are located in different parts of Tamil Nadu.
In 2002, the School of Excellence in Law was established on campus. It was modeled after national law schools. It offers three-year and five-year integrated undergraduate courses. The university also has a Postgraduate and Research Centre. Here, students can pursue Master of Law degrees in eleven specializations. Doctoral programs are also available. Research is conducted in diverse areas of law.
The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University embraces a multidisciplinary approach. It understands the need for interdisciplinary studies in law. The Commissionerate of Municipal Administration partners with the university. Tata Institute of Social Science and Maharashtra National Law University are collaborators. Kovise Foundation Conflict Resolution International and MGR Janaki College of Arts and Science also collaborate. The Institute of Company Secretaries of India is another partner. These partnerships ensure high-quality research and placement.
