What if I told you that a simple thatched hut evolved into one of Chennai’s most revered temples? That’s the story of Vadapalani Andavar Temple. This temple is dedicated to Lord Muruga. We stand before a testament to faith and devotion.

Vadapalani Andavar Temple’s story began humbly over 125 years ago. A Murugan devotee named Annaswami Tambiran built a small thatched hut. He placed a Murugan painting there for personal worship. During worship, Annaswami experienced a divine power. He would utter mysterious things that came true. These utterances were called arulvak. They helped people by curing diseases and securing jobs. They even solemnized marriages.

Annaswami once fell ill. A sadhu advised him to visit Tiruttani. There, he prayed to Muruga. He offered a part of his tongue cut with a knife. Upon his return, his illness vanished. He later visited Palani and had strange experiences. Nearing his end, he asked his friend Ratnaswami to continue his work. Ratnaswami also started giving arulvak. He built a small shrine.

Public donations helped to develop the temple. After Ratnaswami’s death, others continued the work. Eventually, philanthropists transformed the hut into a superb temple. Kripananda Variyar’s name is prominent among the builders of Vadapalani Andavar Temple. Today, it draws a steady stream of pilgrims year-round.

The moolavar or main deity resembles the Palani Muruga. He is in a standing posture. Within the inner prakara are niches for Dakshina Murti, Chandikeswar and Mahalakshmi. A spacious hall hosts marriages and religious discourses. Vadapalani Andavar Temple is among Chennai’s most frequented Murugan shrines.

The temple’s entrance boasts a rajagopuram. It is adorned with stucco images from the Skanda Puranam. In front lies the temple tank. The eastern tower rises 40.8 meters. It showcases 108 bharata natyam dance gestures.

Annaswami Nayakar, a staunch Murugan devotee, actually started it all. He built that small thatched hut for his painted portrait of Murugan. Over time, his words of truth or Arul Vaakku became famous. Devotees sought solutions to problems like education and marriage issues.

The temple was renovated in 1920. It continues to grow in popularity. It is believed that cinema stars contributed to its fame. Rathinasamy Chettiyar asked devotees to call it Vadapalani Temple. The temple is special. Only here can you see Murugan wearing footwear. This symbolizes the shedding of arrogance. He stands with his left foot forward. This shows his eagerness to help devotees.

Many believe that visiting Vadapalani Andavar Temple is equivalent to visiting Palani. Lord Murugan blesses devotees here. His grace resolves their issues. The temple hosts about 7000 marriages each year. It is considered an auspicious place for marriage. The Vadapalani Andavar Temple is truly a place of divine power and blessings for everyone.
