Upon this hallowed ground stands Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá. Its story unfolds before you a testament to faith resilience and survival.

Founded July 16 1769 by Father Junípero Serra this mission became the first in Alta California. It was named for Saint Didacus of Alcalá whose name San Diego translates to. This was not only the first but also the ‘Mother of the Missions’ a starting point for a chain of 21 missions spreading north.

The original mission however faced hardship. A devastating attack in 1775 saw the church consumed by flames. The uprising by local Kumeyaay people resulted in the death of Father Luis Jayme California’s first Christian martyr. He now rests beneath the chancel floor a poignant reminder of that tragic event.

Father Serra returned to rebuild the mission. The new church was part of a larger complex fortified with an outer wall. The mission then focused on becoming self-sufficient. They raised livestock and grew crops wheat corn barley and beans. They even attempted wine production a venture that unfortunately didn’t initially thrive.

The Mission San Diego experienced periods of growth and prosperity but also faced challenges. After Mexico’s independence in 1821 the mission’s lands were transferred. The US military later occupied the mission during the US-Mexican War. In 1862 however President Abraham Lincoln signed a proclamation restoring the mission to the Catholic Church.

This wasn’t the end of the journey. Extensive restoration efforts throughout the 19th and 20th centuries ensured the mission’s survival. In 1976 Pope Paul VI designated the church as a minor basilica a remarkable honor.

Today Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá stands as a symbol of faith and perseverance. It serves as an active parish a cultural center and a lasting tribute to the resilience of the human spirit. Its very stones whisper tales of resilience. These tales echo the unwavering spirit of the people who built and protected it.
