Lost in time, Brodie Castle stands. It whispers tales of fortunes, tragedies, and unexpected turns. Today, we stand before Brodie Castle, now known as Thenral. It is home to the Tamil Nadu Government Music College. But its story began long before melodies filled its halls.

James Brodie, a civil servant with the East India Company, built this castle in the late 1790s. He was inspired by his ancestral home in Scotland. The East India Company gifted him 11 acres of land. This land was on Quibble Island, now part of Adyar. Brodie wanted a home with access to the Adyar River.

From the balcony of Brodie Castle, one can see several iconic points of Chennai. The Theosophical Society, the Broken Bridge, and the Chettinad Palace are visible.

Brodie Castle’s early days were plagued by misfortune. James Brodie’s mother died in a fire. James himself drowned in the Adyar River. His wife dreamt of his death before it happened.

In 1866, tragedy struck again. A boat carrying visitors capsized in the river. Everyone drowned except for one man. This string of events gave Brodie Castle a reputation. It was considered ill-fated.

Despite its dark history, Brodie Castle became home to many notable figures. Sir Thomas Strange, the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Madras, was one of its first tenants. The chaplain of St George’s Cathedral, Edward Vaughan, also lived here.

The Arbuthnot Company bought Brodie Castle. After the firm crashed, Subramaniya Pillai acquired it. Charles Cotton was one of the few residents who seemed unaffected by the house’s past.

In 1937, Chief Justice Lionel Leach experienced the Adyar River flooding the house. P S Kumaraswami Raja, Premier of Madras State, lived here before losing the 1952 elections.

The architecture of Brodie Castle is unique. It blends classical and Scottish styles. Two castellated turrets give it an impressive look. These turrets are Scottish features. They are found in the central and west wings. The castle is 65 feet tall. It was one of the tallest structures outside George Town during East India Company rule.

Brodie Castle was designed to stay cool. Its location near the Adyar River and high ceilings keep the interiors comfortable. Corridors block direct sunlight. This design helped residents adjust to the Chennai climate. Writer Humphrey Trevelyan described it as “most imaginative of the merchants’ palaces.”

The Tamil Nadu Government Music College moved into Brodie Castle in the mid-1950s. The building has 20 spacious rooms and halls. The quiet location is perfect for learning Carnatic music. Students and teachers appreciate the tranquil atmosphere. The name Thendral, meaning breeze, is fitting.

The heritage walk here includes performances by students of the Music College. It provides insight into the history and architectural importance of the building. The architecture has acoustic uniqueness in each room.
