Before European settlers arrived the Karankawa Indians called Fort Bend County home. This land along the Brazos River bend has witnessed centuries of change.

Fort Bend County a county in Texas holds a rich and complex history. Founded in 1838 it was named after a blockhouse built in a bend of the Brazos River. The area’s early economy was built on cotton plantations relying heavily on enslaved African-American labor.

By the 1850s Fort Bend was one of only six counties in Texas where Black people formed the majority of the population. This demographic reality significantly influenced the county’s political landscape. The power struggle between the Jaybirds a predominantly white group and the Woodpeckers who included some white supporters of Black voters culminated in the Jaybird-Woodpecker War of 1888-89.

This violent conflict resulted in the disenfranchisement of African Americans. The Jaybirds seized control and implemented a white-only primary system. This system lasted until 1950 when a lawsuit finally led to the Supreme Court declaring the white primary unconstitutional.

The 20th century saw dramatic shifts in Fort Bend County. Master-planned communities transformed the county’s character. The county’s population boomed attracting people from diverse ethnic backgrounds. In 2015 it became Texas’s wealthiest county.

Hurricane Harvey in 2017 brought devastating floods forcing the evacuation of 200000 residents. Despite the challenges Fort Bend County continues to evolve a vibrant mix of rural heritage and suburban growth. Its story is one of resilience adaptation and remarkable diversity. It’s a county that has faced conflict and injustice and has found strength and prosperity in its ever-changing demographics. Fort Bend County’s history reminds us of the enduring strength of the human spirit.
