Recall tales of invasion. The Portmarnock Martello Tower stands before us. It is a silent sentinel against threats long past. This tower is more than stone and mortar. It is a testament to a time of fear and strategic defense.

Let’s explore the story of the Portmarnock Martello Tower. It is one of twenty-six towers built along Dublin’s coast. These towers were constructed between 1804 and 1806. They defended against a possible Napoleonic invasion.

The name Martello comes from Cape Mortella in Corsica. A tower there withstood a heavy attack. The British were impressed. They modeled these Irish towers after it.

Imagine this tower in its prime. A 24-pound cannon sat on the gun platform. It could rotate to face any approaching threat. A small furnace heated metal shot. This hot shot could devastate enemy ships. It could shatter masts and set sails ablaze. Luckily, the Portmarnock Martello Tower never fired a shot in anger.

Inside, the tower was functional and compact. The first floor housed twelve to fifteen soldiers. They came from the Royal Artillery Academy in Woolwich, London. After training, they were stationed at Islandbridge. Their uniforms were colourful and unique. They carried about seventeen kilograms of equipment. This included a sword, musket, and ammunition.

The ground floor served as an ammunition magazine and store. From the roof, soldiers could see nearby towers. Howth, Ireland’s Eye, Robswall and Portrane were all visible. This ensured a clear line of communication.

A small pier once stood beside the tower. It likely aided construction. Materials would have arrived by sea. By 1835, the pier was already in ruins.

The Portmarnock Martello Tower was disarmed in 1874. It was later sold and converted into a private home. A roof was added to the gun platform. Windows and castellations changed its appearance.

Nearby stood Tobermaclaney. It was a small well of clear water. It sat forty-two meters southwest of the tower.

Today, the Portmarnock Martello Tower remains a dwelling. It has stood for over two centuries. It is a reminder of a time when invasion seemed imminent. Now, it is a peaceful home. The tower connects us to history. It links us to the soldiers who once stood guard. The Portmarnock Martello Tower stands as a proud symbol of resilience. It represents adaptation. It watches over the Irish Sea.
