Beijing University of Technology was founded in 1960. It started with only five engineering departments. The first students came from the Beijing Institute of Technology and Beijing Normal University.
In 1981, the university established a graduate school. By 1985, it was granting doctoral degrees. Beijing University of Technology was among the first in China to award these degrees.
The university grew over the years. In 1990, it acquired the College of Economics and Management. This came from Beijing Union University. The Beijing Computer Institute became part of the university in 1993. It is now the College of Computer Science.
Beijing University of Technology now has many colleges. These include Applied Mathematical and Physical Science, Architecture and Urban Planning, and Arts. There is also Economics and Management, Computer Science, and Electronic Information and Control Engineering.
The university’s campus is quite large. It covers about 800,000 square meters. The buildings have a floor space of 4,940,000 square meters.
The main library is a modern building. It has over 20,000 square meters of floor space. The library holds about 700,000 printed materials. It also has 60,000 e-books. There are more than 40 kinds of databases.
Beijing University of Technology hosted the badminton competitions. This was during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. A new athletic gymnasium was built for this.
