High on St. Thomas Mount, a lone figure meditates. Could this be the spirit of the sage Bhringi, searching for Shiva? St. Thomas Mount, also known as Parangimalai, stands as a testament to interwoven histories and beliefs. This small hillock near Chennai International Airport holds significance for Hindus and Christians alike. Hindu tradition tells of the sage Bhringi, who meditated on this very hill in his quest to see Shiva. The name “Bhringi Malai,” or “the hill of Bhringi,” eventually transformed into “Parangimalai.” Another tale links the name Guindy, a nearby neighborhood, to the sage’s ritual pitcher, or “kindi.” But St. Thomas Mount carries another story, one of Christian faith and martyrdom. It’s believed that St. Thomas the Apostle preached here after landing on the Malabar Coast in 52 AD. He continued his mission along the Coromandel Coast, establishing churches in Mylapore and Little Mount, before his martyrdom on this very mount in 72 AD. Atop St. Thomas Mount sits a shrine built in 1523. This shrine, dedicated to “Our Lady of Expectation,” stands where St. Thomas is believed to have died. A flight of 160 steps leads to the summit, marked by 14 Stations of the Cross. At the base of the mount, the St. Thomas Garrison Church stands as a reminder of the British presence. Within a cave on the mount, an altar marks the spot where St. Thomas is said to have prayed. Look closely, and you’ll see depressions in the rock, said to be from his elbows, and even a handprint attributed to the apostle. A spring within the cave is considered holy, with healing properties. St. Thomas Mount offers more than a breathtaking view. It offers a glimpse into a rich tapestry of faith and legend. A place where ancient traditions meet, leaving a lasting impression on all who visit.
