The Capela de Nossa Senhora de Cádíz wasn’t always known by this name. Originally, it was called the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade or Cais. Its current name arose from a dramatic event. The Porta da Ribeira Chapel was demolished in 1821. The image of Senhora do Ó was rescued and found a new home in our very own Capela de Nossa Senhora de Cádíz. The chapel itself dates back to the 17th century. It faced destruction during the wars of independence and was remodeled in the 19th century. Inside, a masterpiece awaits: an altarpiece carved by João da Costa in the early 18th century. This piece alone makes a visit to the Capela de Nossa Senhora de Cádíz worthwhile. During the pandemic, access to the Capela de Nossa Senhora de Cádíz was limited. It opened for funerals, the festivities honoring Nossa Senhora do Ó (September 19th), or by appointment.
