MGR Memorial

On the sands of Marina Beach, a monument whispers tales of a beloved leader. The MGR Memorial stands as a testament to MG Ramachandran, a man who captured the hearts of Tamil Nadu. The MGR Memorial, officially known as the Bharat Ratna Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. MGR and Puratchi Thalaivi Amma Selvi. J. Jayalalithaa Memorial Complex, sprawls across over 8 hectares. It shares the beach with another important landmark, the Anna Memorial. The MGR Memorial was originally built in 1988. It was inaugurated in May 1990 by Janaki Ramachandran, MGR’s wife. The memorial underwent a transformation. It was renovated and clad in marble, reopening in 1992 under the leadership of J. Jayalalithaa. Jayalalithaa, MGR’s protégée, later joined him in rest at the memorial after her passing in 2016. The MGR Memorial has faced its share of challenges. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami caused damage, requiring significant repairs. The memorial also saw renovations in 2012, which included a new entrance featuring the AIADMK party’s two-leaf symbol and a statue of Pegasus. This addition sparked controversy with the opposition DMK party. Inside the MGR Memorial, a museum chronicles MGR’s life, both as an actor and a politician. The memorial itself has become a place where people come to remember MGR. Some even listen closely at his tomb, hoping to hear the ticking of the watch he was buried with, a testament to the enduring legacy of this remarkable leader.
