Julio Romero de Torres, born in Cordoba in 1874, was a celebrated figure. He achieved national recognition, culminating in the National Medal of Fine Arts in 1908 for his painting “Musa Gitana”. He became a Professor of Clothing at the School of Fine Arts in Madrid. This prompted his move to the capital in 1916. He was also a member of the academies of Fine Arts in Cordoba and the Royal Academy of San Fernando. The plaque itself features a bronze bust of the artist, gazing thoughtfully to his left. Beneath, the coats of arms of Madrid and Cordoba stand side by side. A simple inscription reminds us of the paseo dedicated to his memory. Romero de Torres died young, in 1930, in his beloved Cordoba. His death was a shock to the nation. His legacy, however, lives on.
