Nestled in the heart of Lille, the Église Saint-Matthieu stands as a testament to the city’s rich history. It’s a story of resilience, transformation, and a touch of fiery drama. The present Église Saint-Matthieu wasn’t always dedicated to Saint Matthew. It began its life in the early 17th century as the Jesuit College’s Church of the Immaculate Conception. This was a period when the Jesuits, a powerful religious order, were making their mark on Lille’s educational and spiritual landscape. Their church, a grand statement of their presence, became one of the largest Jesuit churches in France. Tragedy struck in 1744. A devastating fire ripped through the church, leaving it severely damaged. From the ashes, however, rose a new church. Rebuilding began quickly, guided by the architect Dominique Delesalle and later completed by François-Joseph Gombert in 1748. Despite the interruption of the War of the Austrian Succession, the church was finally consecrated in 1750. The new Église Saint-Matthieu, while retaining some of the simplicity typical of Jesuit places of worship, emerged with a distinct Baroque style. The Jesuits were expelled from France in 1765. The building then transitioned into the chapel of the college and later the military hospital that occupied the former college grounds. The church’s façade, a sober stone structure in the classical style, stands tall amidst the narrow surrounding streets. This height is further emphasized by the towering 57-meter bell tower, a beacon visible from afar. Inside, the Église Saint-Matthieu retains an air of simplicity. This reflects the Jesuit emphasis on preaching and practice over ornate decoration. The church continues to serve the community. It stands as a symbol of its enduring spirit, a reminder of its history, and a place of worship amidst the vibrant tapestry of Lille.
