Jinlong Town whispers tales of dragons. This isn’t about mythical creatures though. It’s about a wall, a 1,680-meter-long, 4-meter-high, and 3-meter-wide wall known as the Jinlong Great Wall. It coils around Jinlong Lake, a man-made reservoir nestled in the Longquanyi Huaguoshan Mountain scenic area. Built between 2001 and 2002, this wall, with its five beacon towers, echoes the grandeur of its namesake, the Great Wall of China. But the Jinlong Great Wall has a unique story. It stands as a testament to local ambition and a touch of irony. It was never meant to be a true defensive structure. Instead, it was conceived as a decorative wall encircling Jinlong Lake, a project initiated after the reservoir’s completion. The local government’s vision was to create a visual spectacle, a semi-closed wall that would evoke the spirit of the dragon and enhance the area’s appeal. This wall, however, almost met an untimely demise. In 2004, Jinlong Town merged with Luodai Town. This merger sparked a debate over the wall’s future, and demolition became a real possibility. Luckily, the Jinlong Great Wall survived. Today, it offers visitors a serene escape. The walk along the wall is picturesque, with lush trees lining the path. Wild plants bearing vibrant red fruits add to the natural beauty. Along the wall, you’ll find several attractions, including the Jinlong Temple, a place for peaceful reflection. There’s also the Moyan statue, the Longan well, and the Guanyinyan, each adding a layer of intrigue to this unique site. The area around the Jinlong Great Wall has been further enhanced with cherry blossoms and cherry trees, transforming it into a natural landscape park. It’s a place for leisure, tourism, and a peaceful retreat from the bustling city.
