In the heart of Madrid, nestled within the vibrant Latina district, stands the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario. A humble sanctuary, it whispers tales of resilience, community, and unwavering faith. Let’s step back in time to the 1940s. Madrid was recovering from the Spanish Civil War. The area now known as Batán was sparsely populated. A small group of Franciscan Conventual friars, displaced from their Mataró home, sought refuge in this quiet corner of the city. On April 1, 1944, Bishop Leopoldo Eijo Garay entrusted them with a new parish dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario began its life in a modest house at number 21 on the Carretera de Extremadura. This simple structure served as a home, convent, and parish. The friars lived amongst the poor, embodying the Franciscan spirit of poverty. The first community comprised Father José Gómez, Father Gregorio Millán, Father Emilio Gonzalvo, and Brother Antonio Viñas. Later that year, the energetic Father Román Villa became the parish priest. He dedicated himself to the burgeoning community, even losing a hand in a fireworks accident while calling his parishioners to Christmas Eve mass in 1947. In 1946, the diocese purchased land for a new church. To fund the construction, they established the “Ntra. Sra. del Rosario” brickyard, providing jobs for local workers. The church, built with over 23 million bricks, was completed on October 3, 1950. This original structure became the heart of the community. It witnessed countless baptisms, weddings, and funerals, intertwining itself with the lives of generations. The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a community hub, fostering growth and connection. The Franciscan Secular Order was established there in 1951, and the Colonia del Rosario, housing 314 families, opened in 1960. The neighborhood blossomed around the church. The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario adapted to the changing times. The altar was repositioned to face the congregation in 1965, reflecting the spirit of the Second Vatican Council. As the neighborhood grew, new parishes were formed, creating a network of faith within the city. The original church, however, held a special place in the hearts of those who called it home. Eventually, the beloved church became too small, and the friary fell into disrepair. The old church was demolished in 1986. Services were temporarily held in the “Rosvi,” but the spirit of the community remained strong. A new Parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario was inaugurated on November 29, 1987, a testament to the enduring faith and resilience of the community it serves. The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario continued to evolve, undergoing renovations in 2019 to mark its 75th anniversary. Though the faces and times have changed, the heart of this community remains steadfast in its devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary. The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario stands as a beacon of faith, a reminder of the power of community, and a testament to the enduring spirit of the Franciscan friars who first brought the Rosary to Batán.
