Beneath our feet lie layers of Seoul’s history. We are standing before Jeongdok Public Library. It is more than just a repository of books. It is a place where stories converge.

Jeongdok Public Library opened its doors in January 1977. It stands on the former grounds of Gyeonggi High School in Bukchon. Imagine students once bustling through these very spaces. Now, silence prevails as people read.

Before it was a library, this site housed Jongchinbu. Jongchinbu was constructed in 1433. It was one of only three remaining Joseon Dynasty government buildings. The others were lost to invasions and war.

Inside Jeongdok Public Library are over half a million books. There are also 16300 reference materials. The Seoul Education Museum is within the library. It holds a collection of 12000 reference materials.

The building itself has a story. It was built in 1938. It was one of the finest examples of steel-reinforced concrete school construction. During the Korean War, the US military used it as a communications unit. In 1956, it returned to being a high school.

Four of Jeongdok Public Library’s buildings are designated national cultural assets. They stand as silent witnesses to the passage of time.

Jeongdok Public Library offers more than just books. It hosts monthly lectures by authors. There are also photo exhibitions and reading seminars. Music and dance performances enrich the cultural experience.

Take a moment to appreciate the blend of history and learning here. The library is located within 500 meters of exit 1 of Line 3 Anguk Station. It is easily accessible for all.

Note the study rooms open early and close late. They are available from 7 AM to 10 PM most of the year. Even in winter, they open at 8 AM.

As you explore, remember the many stories held within these walls. Consider the students, soldiers, and readers. Jeongdok Public Library is a place where the past meets the present.
