Hidden away just south of La Jolla Cove lies Boomer Beach. It’s a small beach known for its powerful surf. Bodysurfers love it. Boogie boards and surfboards are prohibited. The waves are strong. Swimming is challenging even for experienced swimmers. Boomer Beach is perfect for a relaxing picnic. You can watch the bodysurfers from the shore. Since 2021 parts of Boomer Beach have been closed seasonally. This is to protect California sea lions. The sea lions use the area as a rookery. People have been seen getting too close to the sea lions. This is dangerous for both humans and the animals. Adult sea lions can be aggressive. They are protective of their pups. Human interaction can lead to injuries or abandoned pups. The closure includes Point La Jolla and Boomer Beach. It stretches from the Conrad F Limbaugh and Harold F Riley plaque to the last gazebo above Boomer Beach. An ocean access lane remains open for water sports. The seasonal closure has been successful. It’s helped keep humans and sea lions separated. The city is considering permanent solutions. These might include more signs a gate and security cameras. The city council voted for a year-round closure. They want to ensure public safety and protect the sea lions. The closure aims to strike a balance between ecology and public use. The hope is that the sea lions continue to thrive. Boomer Beach will remain a special spot. But it’s a place where safety and nature coexist.
