Built in 223 AD, Wumiao initially served as both Liu Bei’s tomb, the Hui Tomb, and a shrine, the Hanzhaolie Temple. Later, a separate temple was erected near Liu Bei’s mausoleum to honor Zhuge Liang, who died in 234 AD. Because Zhuge Liang held the title of “Wu Xiang Hou” (Marquis Wu), this temple became known as Wumiao. During the Southern and Northern Dynasties, these three distinct sites merged into the singular Wumiao complex we see today. Wumiao is unique as it is the only temple in China where an emperor and his minister are enshrined together. Step through the front gate of Wumiao, beneath the inscription “Han Zhao Lie Miao,” meaning the Temple of Liu Bei. Inside, the vivid statues of the Three Kingdoms’ key players seem to watch you, their colorful costumes a testament to the Qing Dynasty’s Emperor Kangxi’s admiration for Zhuge Liang. He ordered the temple’s reconstruction, ensuring the vibrancy we witness today.
