In the heart of Muldenhütten, a giant slumbers. The Erstes sächsisches Zylindergebläse, the first of its kind in Saxony’s silver smelting industry, stands as a testament to ingenuity and progress. Imagine Freiberg in 1823. The familiar sounds of leather and wooden bellows no longer sufficed. The introduction of coal and coke demanded a more powerful breath to fuel the fiery heart of the smelting process. The Erstes sächsisches Zylindergebläse answered this call. Chosen from three competing designs, the Lauchhammer ironworks creation promised both power and affordability. Construction began in 1827, within a dedicated chamber of the Schachtofenhutte, the former Upper Muldenhütten smeltery. Nine months later, the two-cylinder balancing blower roared to life, its rhythmic pulse revitalizing four Rohschlackeöfen (smelting furnaces), two silver-roasting hearths, and two blacksmith’s forges. The Erstes sächsisches Zylindergebläse wasn’t just a machine, it was the lung of Muldenhütten. By 1848, increased ore flow demanded even greater power from the Erstes sächsisches Zylindergebläse. A third cylinder joined the original two. The water wheel that once drove the mighty bellows was replaced with a Fourneyron turbine, a cutting-edge standing-wave radial turbine. Time marched on, and in the late 1920s, the Schachtofenhutte was demolished. On its foundations rose the current Gebläsehaus, where the Erstes sächsisches Zylindergebläse found its new home. Until 1954, it served the smelting forges. Then, a slow decline began. By 1986, rust had seized its mighty gears. The gallery surrounding it lay broken. In the winter of 1986-87, the wheel chamber collapsed entirely. Hope, however, was not lost. Thanks to the Bergbau- und Hüttenkombinat Freiberg (BHKF), extensive cleaning and conservation began. Although initial restoration attempts stalled, the Fachgruppe Hüttengeschichte spearheaded a renewed effort in 1991. A dedicated team worked tirelessly, breathing life back into the Erstes sächsisches Zylindergebläse. On June 16, 1993, during the Agricola Colloquium, the once-silent giant roared back to life. Now a museum piece, the Erstes sächsisches Zylindergebläse continues to tell its story. Within the Gebläsehaus gallery, exhibits detail the history of both the machine and the Freiberg smelting industry, encompassing Muldenhütten and Halsbrücke. The Erstes sächsisches Zylindergebläse stands as a proud symbol of Muldenhütten’s 700-year smelting tradition. It is a monument to the partnership between Freiberg and Halsbrücke, the heart of ore processing for the entire Erzgebirge region, and a key component of the Montanregion Erzgebirge UNESCO World Heritage site.
