Perched high above the Oder River stands Lebus a town steeped in history. Imagine its imposing Burgberg the hill that dominates the landscape. For over 3000 years people have lived here drawn to the strategic location. Lebus was once a significant settlement a testament to human resilience.

Lebus boasts a rich and complex past. First mentioned in 1109 it flourished as a bishopric. Its strategic position on the Oder River made it a crucial trading hub. The Burgberg itself was a powerful fortress. Its three sections Turmberg Schlossberg and Pletschenberg protected the town. Around 1000 BC the Aurither Culture fortified the hill. This was one of the largest early fortifications in central Europe. Germanic tribes like the Lombards and Semnoni lived here before the Common Era. Around the 8th and 9th centuries the Slavic Leubuzzi tribe settled the area. They gave the region its name Terra Lebusana.

Lebus’s history is a tapestry woven from conflict and change. For centuries it changed hands between Polish and Brandenburg rulers. Polish Dukes built a castellany here to control the Oder. In 1226 it received German town rights from the Silesian Duke Henry I. The town was a key to the Kingdom of Poland. The Bishopric of Lebus was an important center for Christian missionaries. It battled for control with the Silesian Piasts and Brandenburg Margraves. The seat of the bishopric moved to Fürstenwalde in 1385. By 1555 the bishopric was finally secularized.

Lebus endured many hardships. Fires ravaged the castle. A lightning strike in 1713 caused further damage. The castle was eventually demolished. The town shrunk to a village. World War II nearly obliterated Lebus destroying 97% of the town. The Altstadt was almost completely wiped out. Even the Pfarrkirche the parish church burned down in 1801. It was rebuilt in 1806. Today it stands as a symbol of Lebus’s enduring spirit.

Today Lebus offers stunning views. Walk across the Burgberg. See the reconstructed outlines of the former castle. Admire the landscape stretching across the Oder into Poland. The Oderberge nature reserve boasts unique flora and fauna including the vibrant Adonisröschen. The town has a good infrastructure. There are bus connections to Frankfurt (Oder) and Seelow. Visitors can enjoy hiking biking or watersports. Lebus offers accommodation and gastronomy.

Lebus might seem quiet now. But it whispers of a rich history. A history of strategic importance fierce battles thriving trade and enduring resilience.
